Recovering from any kind of addiction can be a difficult process that takes a tremendous amount of dedication and hard work early on.  Anyone in early recovery knows that there are potential impediments to their sobriety every day; the key is learning how to cope with these triggers and continue their journey in sobriety.  Fortunately, the explosion of mobile apps and software development over the last few years has given way to a slew of great apps that can help a person relax and add to their recovery.  There are plenty of recovery apps in the Apple iTunes App Store as well as on Google Play for Android that are designed to help people grow in recovery.  Some of these apps cost a few dollars, but there are also a pretty great selection of free apps to help with meditation and recovery.

Stress is one of the biggest obstacles a person in recovery faces.  It is very important to learn how to manage stress, and there are a few recovery apps that can help with that.

InspireMe: Daily Inspiration reading app on Google Play. Each day a new inspiration is uploaded along with questions, quotes, and ideas to help with guide your morning mediations.

Buddhist Meditation Trainer: Personal meditation trainer to help relax and enlighten your journey in self-care. Features 10 levels of enlightenment by using quotes, meditation sounds, and a timer to help you gradually add on more time with each sitting.

Lightening Bug: A great simple app to help meditate, sleep, or relax. These soothing nature sounds can help with meditation, distraction while multitasking, or sleep. Lightning Bug features a large library of sounds ranging from a river to the ocean, to a thunder storm. Sounds are so realistic, you swore you were there.

Breathe2Relax: is another free app which helps an individual learn diaphragmatic breathing and how to use breathing techniques as a way to relieve stress.  Proper breathing can help alleviate muscle tension and make it easier to clear the mind.

Sponsor Support: One of the top free recovery apps from the iTunes App Store for recovering alcoholics is called Sponsor Support.  Sponsor Support has a variety of features that help individuals follow their 12 step program.  It allows users to track the number of days, months and years they’ve been sober. It also has a feature that lets an individual immediately call or text sponsors and helplines in times of need.

iRecovery: A recovery app for those who are in recovery from addiction to drugs, alcohol, sex, etc…iRecovery tracks your recovery progress week by week and awards points for certain goals obtained throughout your journey. Keep track of your meetings, sponsor/sponsee meetings, step work, recovery activties, and readings/assignments.

Georgia Sobriety: Features a free version of the Big Book of Alcoholics Anonymous, daily meditations from georgiasobriety.com, and includes your very own sober calculator.

Paid Recovery & Mediation Apps on Google Play & Itunes

One Day At A Time: For just $2, you will have access to the AA Big Book, 44 big book stories from 1st and 2nd edition, and daily meditations from resources like Hazelden. You can also keep track of your recovery program with unique features like sober calculator, fellowship contact info, and a calendar to keep track of friends sobriety dates. Details of the promises, Big Book prayers, principles, are also easy accessible. Can also be found on iTunes.

12 Steps AA Companion: Alcoholics Anonymous members will full access to Sobriety Calculator, AA Big Book., Prayers, Promises, Notes, Contacts. One of these most detailed and comprehensive apps on the market for AA apps. Found in the Android Market & iTunes.

Friend Of Jimmy: For individuals recovering from drug addiction, Friend of Jimmy is a useful tool that only costs $1 in the iTunes App Store.  This simple recovery app for Narcotics Anonymous members use as a means of tracking their clean time. This basic calculator breaks down your recovery time in years, months, day, hours, and minutes. There is even a virtual Medallion.

recoveryBox: Designed for those in recovery from any form of addiction and costs about $2. App helps add to your recovery but does not replace your program in the rooms. App features bad habit breaking insights, tracks clean and sober date, add treatment goals, record your 12 step program process, sort and filter goals, become accountable through various options like tracking triggers, motivation alerts, earn badges, and much more.

There are a handful of free and paid recovery apps designed specifically to support individuals who are recently recovering from alcohol or drug addiction.

Stress relief and meditation apps, and any apps designed specifically to help people going through recovery, are great tools that offer addicts the additional support throughout the day.  These are convenient and inexpensive tools and services that may help anyone who is feeling stressed about their recovery from drugs or alcohol.  They are however, not a replacement for treatment offered at a qualified inpatient rehabilitation program.  If you or anyone you know is struggling with addiction please get help today.
